She was a sports reporter for some of the largest outlets in the United States. The journalist spent more than a decade reporting on the sport for The Washington Post, including tennis, football and basketball. In 2004, Nichols moved on to ESPN for a nine-year run during which she was awarded two Emmy Awards and appeared on many of the network's most popular shows, such as SportsCenter as well as NFL Countdown. Reporters were also in the stands as well as a participant on Monday Night Football. Then she moved on to CNN as well as Turner Sports. The first program she developed and hosted was self-titled, Unguarded featuring Rachel Nichols, and aired every week on CNN and CNN International. The show had more than 1 billion viewers across the world. During this time Nichols covered TNT's NBA broadcasts which included regular season, playoffs and All-Star broadcast teams. Nichols also covered golf, baseball, as well as Final Four broadcasts for CBS and TBS. marking only the second moment in the award's 42-year history that a woman was nominated amongst the more than 200 nominations.
